Warum LaTeX?
LaTeX is der de-facto Standard für wissenschaftliche Publikationen. LaTeX Dokumente können einfach in pdf-Format umgewandelt werden und sind so auch im Internet zugänglich.
Word2TeX is a converter designed in order to use with Microsoft Word and enables Microsoft Word to save documents in LaTeX format. This gives the opportunity to convert existing Microsoft Word documents to LaTeX and to create new LaTeX documents right in your mainstream word processor rather than requiring a completely separate editing environment. Using Word2TeX in conjunction with Microsoft Word, you can easily create articles, technical reports, research papers, dissertations and even entire books for such hard and not always comfortable markup-based system as LaTeX. It doesn't, in fact, require that one even learn LaTeX in order to publish LaTeX papers, and so can save students and other newcomers to scientific publishing the long climb up the LaTeX learning curve and also can help LaTeX experts to save their time. Instead of inputting LaTeX commands, you can simply use Equation Editor (or MathType) in Microsoft Word to create equations and you easily click and point to insert a picture or to make a table (for more detailed information please see our Word2TeX Features). Then you can convert your document into LaTeX format with the help of Word2TeX. Thus, Word2TeX leverages your investment in Microsoft Word.
Why you may need your documents to be in LaTeX format? LaTeX is a de-facto standard in scientific publishing and most scientific publishers accept papers only in LaTeX format. LaTeX documents can be published not only on the paper, but on the Web using, for instance, pdfTeX which compiles TeX/LaTeX documents to PDF (Portable Document Format by Adobe). Read more about Web publishing with PDF in Thomas Merz book "Web Publishing with Acrobat/PDF" (Springer-Verlag, 1997, ISBN 3-540-63762-1), also it is highly recommended to visit BinaryThing.com which runs The ePublishing Network -- network of interrelated sites dedicated to electronic publishing (ePublishing).
System Requirements
In order to install and run Word2TeX, your computer must have:
Microsoft Windows 95 or later (Windows 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP);
The Word2TeX converter is not independent application, but the add-in to Microsoft Word and it requires Microsoft Word 95 or later version (Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, XP);
A hard disk drive with at least 2 megabytes of free space.
Every Word2TeX conversion sample consists of three files: source Microsoft Word document (file with .doc extension); output LaTeX document (file with .tex extension, or with .zip extension -- zip-archive if document contains figures); and output LaTeX document compiled to Adobe Portable Document Format (file with .pdf extension), by Hàn Thê Thành pdfTeX compiler.
You may need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view PDF (Portable Document Format) files. If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader click here to download and install this free product.
Word2TeX is very easy to use once installed. To translate your Word document to LaTeX you just need to F ile|Save A s... with " TeX " saving format option:
Word2TeX program folder contains files word2tex.cnv, word2tex.wll. Then copy word2tex.cnv to Text Converters folder (usually Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TEXTCONV) and word2tex.wll to Start Up folder (usually \STARTUP).
After doing this you'll have to open any text file (non-native Word doc) in Word and "TeX" option will appear in F ile|Save A s... dialog box.
Word2TeX can't convert Word drawings (Shapes), so you should convert them to figures first.
In your Word document click on that Shape so that all the Shape will be selected;
copy it to clipboard (Ctrl-Ins or Edit|Copy );
open WordPad application that is supplied with Windows ( Programs|Accessories|WordPad );
paste picture from clipboard ( Edit|Paste or Shift-Ins);
select it and copy to clipboard from WordPad;
return back to Word and paste it.
In Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft supply PSCRIPT.DLL PostScript printer driver, which does not write EPS files. Upgrade to Word2TeX 3.0, it translates PS to EPS automatically in most cases.
Yes, Word2TeX can convert Design Science MathType equations. Moreover it can convert equations created by any of existing MathType versions. Since MathType is the most popular tool for writing equations Word2TeX will be improved to support future versions of MathType when they will be released.
